SLESA Awards
SLESA is proud to present several annual awards to Sri Lankan Engineering community in South Australia to acknowledge and celebrate our engineers’ outstanding career achievements and contribute to the community.
The awards ceremony will be held annually during the SLESA Annual Engineers Night.
The awards will be presented to those who have demonstrated their achievements, dedication, professionalism, and contribution to the community under the following four categories:
- SLESA Honorary Engineer ( SLESA-HE) – Number of awardees will vary each year
- SLESA Inspiring Engineer (SLESA-IE)
- SLESA Emerging Engineer (SLESA-EE)
- SLESA Engineering Research and Innovation Project (SLESA-ERIP)
The objectives of the awards are:
- To identify and acknowledge the Sri Lankan engineers who have made a significant contribution to the engineering profession in Australia or overseas.
- To inspire young engineers and promote the engineering profession.
- To encourage Engineering students to do well in their degree programs
- To celebrate SLESA members’ achievements
Selection process
An independent (non-SLESA) expert panel consisting of four professional Engineers representing (1) Engineers Australia (EA), (2) Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), (3) an Australian University and (4) a consulting engineering organization will assess each application. The final selection of the awardees for the first three awards will be based on their written submissions. An awardee for the outstanding research and innovation project will be selected based on written and oral submissions.
The award committee of the SLESA will coordinate the application process and liaise with the assessment panel but will not influence the panel’s decision. Applicants’ privacy and the confidentiality of the information provided will be guaranteed. Only the awardees will be announced.

SLESA Honorary Engineer
This is an award to acknowledge the contribution made by the senior engineers (currently retired) in the Sri Lankan community in South Australia and only awarded once to an eligible member. The number of awards in any year will depend on the number of retired engineers being successfully nominated. Each awardee will receive a plaque and a gift at the Awards Ceremony.
Eligibility Criteria
- Nominator is a SLESA member
- Nominee is a Sri Lankan engineer
- Nominee currently lives in South Australia
- Nominee has not been awarded previously
Nomination Process
A nominator will submit a 200-word summary of the nominee’s career. The points to be covered include the nominee’s;
- technical expertise and innovation,
- contribution to the community welfare and
- contribution to the engineering profession
Submit Nomination For SLESA Honorary Engineer
SLESA Inspiring Engineer
This award recognizes senior engineers who inspire young engineers through demonstrated excellence in their career and contribution to the engineering profession and the community. Any SLESA engineer who graduated over ten years ago is qualified for this award. The awardee needs to be a SLESA member at the time of application. The awardee will receive a plaque and a gift at the Awards Ceremony.
Application Process
The one-step online application process involves answering the following five questions using 150 to 200 words:
- What is an inspiring engineer is, and what does that mean to you?
- Can you describe your contribution (with examples) to the engineering profession in Australia or overseas?
- Summaries the impact you have made on the community?
- What do you believe is your greatest professional accomplishment, and why?
- Can you describe how you have worked towards achieving one of your personal goals?
Selection Process
Each correctly submitted application for this category will be assessed by the independent panel and awardee will be selected using following five selection criteria:
- Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and leadership
- Demonstrated innovation and resourcefulness within the engineering profession
- Demonstrated technical and professional expertise in Engineering
- Community engagement and impacts of the work through their contribution
Application for SLESA Inspiring Engineer
SLESA Emerging Engineer
This award recognizes young engineers who have excelled in their career and made a significant contribution to the engineering profession/community. Any SLESA member who graduated within the past ten years is eligible for this award. The awardee needs to be a SLESA member at the time of application. The awardee will receive a plaque and a gift at the Awards Ceremony.
Application Process
The one-step online application process involves answering the following five questions using 150 to 200 words:
- Why do you consider an emerging engineer?
- Can you describe your contribution (with examples) to the engineering profession in Australia or overseas?
- Can you summarise (with examples) the impact you have made on the community?
- What do you believe is your greatest professional accomplishment, and why?
- Can you describe how you have worked towards achieving one of your personal goals?
Selection Process
Each correctly submitted application for this category will be assessed by the independent panel and awardee will be selected using following five selection criteria:
- Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and leadership
- Demonstrated innovation and resourcefulness within the engineering profession
- Demonstrated technical and professional expertise in Engineering
- Community engagement and impacts of the work through their contribution
Apply For SLESA Emerging Engineer
SLESA Outstanding Engineering Research and Innovation Project
This award recognizes engineering students who have excelled in completing research and innovation projects during their undergraduate or postgraduate degrees. Students/engineers who studied at a South Australian University and completed research and innovation project within the past three years are eligible to apply. Students are not to mention the names of the university or the supervisors in the executive summary or the presentation. The winner will be asked to provide those details at a later stage. The winner will receive a $500 gift voucher and a SLESA achievement certificate at the Award Ceremony. The winner will present the project at SLESA AGM.
Application Process
The application process involves an online submission. The applicant will submit a 500-word executive summary and a three-minute video of a PowerPoint presentation of the project. The presentation should address research questions/hypotheses, the working context (group or individual), the role of the applicant and research outcomes/impact.
Assessment Process
Each correctly submitted application for this category will be assessed based on the written submission and the video presentation by the independent panel and awardee will be selected using following five selection criteria:
- content and structure
- the impact/outcome
- media quality and
- communication (written language in the abstract and semi-formal speaking language and confidence in the presentation).
Important Dates
Closing date for applications and nominations for all the awards is 15th June 2022
The Awards Ceremony is scheduled to be held on 30th July 2022
